Barney
Hickey, RN, MScN,CPMHN(C)
is a registered nurse from St. John’s Newfoundland and has called
Vancouver home since 1982. He has practised professionally in the areas of medical,
surgical, and psychiatric nursing, in both administration and
clinical practice roles. Barney is a Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse (CPMHN)
in Canada, a professional designation from the Canadian Nurses
Association (CNA). Barney received his RN diploma in St. John’s
Newfoundland. He holds a BScN (with distinction) from the University
of Victoria, and also holds a masters degree in nursing(MScN) from the
University of British Columbia School of Nursing, Vancouver, BC.
He is seeking your support for charitable
purposes.
Barney
has been involved extensively as an active leader within the
Canadian and American Associations of Nurses in AIDS Care. As part
of Canada’s National Strategy on HIV/AIDS, he was recently appointed
by federal health minister Anne McLellan to represent BC on the
national Ministerial Council on HIV/AIDS As a nurse and gay man, he
has been recognized nationally and provincially in 2001 and 2002 by
Nursing Awards of Excellence bestowed for his “exceptional
contributions to the development of HIV care in Canada.” Barney is a highly visible
gay man who has proudly
called Vancouver home since 1982. In November, 2002, he
received the Presidents
Award from the BC Bears for outstanding community development. for
his energy, drive, commitment and consistency in making the GLBT
community of Vancouver a better place. Barney also ran as a city
council candidate in Vancouver’s 2002 municipal election and lost,
but won in terms of increasing the gay vote from 30% to 62% voter
turn out and a complete change in civic
government.
Barney
competed for and won the title of Mr. Vancouver
Leather 2003 because he feels that Vancouver title holders must
exemplify a strong sense of community, and must work tirelessly to
give back to the GLBT community. He is passionately committed to the
principles of social justice for all persons, and to GLBT community
involvement in charitable work. His designated charity for the
coming year is the Hummingbird Kids Society, which deals
with BC children with HIV/AIDS. He has a wicked sense of humour and
pledges to bring fun to the title on behalf of Western Canada
Leather Pride (WCLP).
Due to his extensive heath care
experience, as an RN and gay man, Barney is used to working within a
culturally rich and diverse GLBT community. He aspires to use his
nursing education, talent, expertise, networks and wisdom in making
the title of Mr. Vancouver Leather 2003 a position to influence
positive change in his community of Vancouver through charitable
work.
Barney exemplifies excellence in
his professional life by being a dedicated practitioner, choosing to
enact his professional nursing life among disadvantaged people in
Vancouver. He pledges to do the same as the title holder for Mr.
Vancouver Leather 2003. He holds current memberships in the BC
Bears, The Knights of Malta Dogwood Chapter He was named an Urban
Legend by Westender newspaper in April 2002 and was an outstanding
nominee for the BC AccolAIDS awards in 2002.
